Face fabric, membrane, insulation, foam, sole compound, buckles and zip quality. Material choice explains most of the difference between two items that look identical in a product photo and cost very different amounts.
How a company handles a failed zip, a delaminated membrane or a worn sole says more about whether gear lasts than any feature list. We look at whether spares exist, whether repairs are offered, and what is excluded.
We read long-term accounts from people who have used the same item for several seasons, and we look for agreement between them. A single report is an anecdote; several that describe the same failure point is a pattern.
