Keeping a Rain Shell Working

Most jackets that "stopped being breathable" are dirty and have lost their water repellent finish - and both of those are fixable at home.

A waterproof shell has a short list of ways to fail, and they arrive in a predictable order. First the durable water repellent finish on the outer fabric wears off. Then dirt, sweat and detergent residue clog the face fabric. Only after both of those does the membrane itself - the part people blame - come into question. Since the first two are fixable in a washing machine, a good number of “dead” jackets are not dead at all.

What DWR does, and why it matters more than it sounds

The durable water repellent finish is a treatment applied to the face fabric. It lowers the surface tension of the fabric so water beads and rolls off instead of soaking in.

It is not what makes the jacket waterproof. That is the membrane, plus taped seams and the zip. What DWR does is keep the outer fabric from wetting out - and that matters for two reasons. A wetted-out jacket feels cold and clammy against your arms, and it blocks the passage of vapour, because the membrane can only move moisture from a humid inside to a drier outside. If liquid water is sitting on the outside of the membrane, that gradient collapses and condensation builds up inside.

So a jacket with a worn DWR behaves exactly like a jacket with a failed membrane. It leaks nowhere, and yet you finish the day wet.

Clean it before you decide anything

Before concluding that a jacket has failed, wash it. Cleaning is not a risk to the membrane; modern membranes and laminates are designed to be washed, and every maker’s care label says so. What actually damages jackets is dirt (which abrades the fabric from the inside), body oils, sunscreen, and detergent residue left in the machine.

The method:

  1. Read the care label and follow it. It overrides anything here.
  2. Empty the pockets, close all zips and fasten velcro. A closed velcro tab can shred a face fabric in the drum.
  3. Use a technical wash or a mild liquid detergent with no softener, no bleach and no optical brighteners. Powder detergent can leave residue that attracts water.
  4. Wash on a gentle, warm cycle with an extra rinse if the machine allows it. Two rinses are better than one.
  5. Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets, ever. Both leave a coating that destroys water repellency.

If you have been washing the jacket with ordinary household detergent for years, residue may be the whole problem, and a couple of technical washes may restore more than you expect.

Reactivating and reapplying the finish

Some DWR finishes can be reactivated by warmth. If the label allows it, a short tumble dry on a low setting - or a cool iron through a cloth - is often enough to bring beading back on a jacket whose finish is intact but tired.

When a wash and warmth do not restore it, apply a new finish:

  • Spray-on treatments are applied to the clean, damp or dry outer fabric and target only the outside. They are more fiddly and use more product, but they leave the inside of the jacket untouched.
  • Wash-in treatments are added to the washing machine. They are quick and thorough, but they treat both faces of the garment. Treating the inside can affect how the inner surface wicks and can reduce the jacket’s breathability, which is why spray-on is the usual recommendation for lined shells and wash-in is more common for unlined items such as softshells.

Either way, apply to a clean jacket and follow the dwell and drying instructions on the bottle. A fresh finish on a dirty jacket is a waste of money.

Damage that is worth repairing

Small holes are the most common physical damage: a spark from a stove, a snag on a branch, a crampon point, or abrasion where a pack strap rubs. Left alone, a small hole becomes a tear, because the fabric around it is unsupported.

  • Tears and holes can be patched with repair tape or a self-adhesive patch on the outside, ideally with rounded corners. Clean and dry the area first, and press firmly. For larger damage, a sewn and taped repair is a job for a specialist.
  • Zip failures are usually repairable. A zip that splits behind the slider often just needs a new slider, which a repair shop can fit. A zip with missing teeth usually needs replacing, which is a bigger job but still worth doing on an expensive jacket.
  • Hem and cuff repairs, replacement drawcords and new velcro are cheap and quick.

Damage that is not

Delamination is the separation of the membrane from the face fabric or the lining. You will find it as bubbles, a crinkled inner surface, or a white, powdery layer inside. Small areas can sometimes be stabilised, but once delamination covers a large area the jacket is finished, because the structure that makes it waterproof and durable has gone.

Persistent leaking through the fabric after washing and re-proofing usually means membrane damage from repeated abrasion or a folding crack. There is no home fix, and a repair is rarely economical.

Failed seam tape along several long seams is a borderline case. Re-taping is possible on some constructions and it can be done by a specialist, but factory laminates are difficult to repair reliably, and the result is rarely as good as the original.

Retiring a jacket sensibly

Retire a shell when the cost of repair approaches the price of a replacement, when the damage is structural rather than cosmetic, or when it no longer keeps you dry in the conditions you actually walk in. A jacket with small patches, a replaced zip and a fresh DWR still has years in it, and those years are exactly the ones for which it was bought.

Storage and habits that extend life

  • Store the jacket clean and dry, on a hanger rather than compressed in a stuff sack. Dirt left on fabric for months turns into abrasion.
  • Wash it more often than you think necessary, especially after a sweaty trip or after wearing it next to bare skin.
  • Rotate two shells if you walk often. A jacket has time to dry properly between trips, and fabric ages more slowly when it is not always the same one in the rain.
  • Do not store a wet jacket in a pack. Mould and hydrolysis both do damage that no re-proofing can undo.

None of this is complicated, and all of it costs a fraction of a new jacket. The trick is doing it before the jacket is worn out rather than after.
